Sliding Kitchen Cabinet Drawers

February 27th, 2012

Notice anything new around here?  We finally got around to upgrading our header.  After I read this post from Michelle at Decor and the Dog, Lisa and I spent some time picking photos and messing with picnik.com.  I have to admit, our new header looks perhaps a bit too much like Michelle’s old one, but I promise that’s not intentional.  Lisa actually picked the layout and she didn’t even read her post until after we uploaded it.  We still need to make some changes to the theme, but those changes are going to take some time.

If you also couldn’t tell, we’ve decided to start a new project, albeit a small one.  Since I can’t lift the 3/4″ plywood sheets I’ll need for the dining room related project yet, (I’ve still got another couple weeks of post hernia surgery recovery ahead of me) I’m electing to tackle a carpentry project that only requires very light materials.  We’re building additional sliding kitchen cabinet drawers to our existing cabinets!

Here’s our current situation:

We have about six cabinets that have the pullout shelves up top, but none down below.  After ten minutes of using the top shelves, you realize just how useful they are.  If the bottom’s had them as well, it would make the kitchen more functional.

We’re going to try to recreate the existing drawers almost exactly so the additional units look like they came with the cabinets and we’re going to do it from scratch.

These drawers, oh and I’m not sure if I should call them drawers or shelves, are made from maple. Maple is pretty common for the interiors of kitchen cabinets. The front piece is maple hardwood and the sides and back are maple veneered particle board. You can tell which is hardwood and which is plywood by giving it a close examination.

You can see the natural lightness of the wood.  The plywood has a taped edge on it.  If you still can’t tell, take a look at the back… you can clearly see the particle board interior.

While I haven’t started construction yet, I’ve already started looking for the hardware.  It’s unique.  Check out these brackets in the back of the cabinet.  I can’t find this type of drawer slide anywhere…

It has a 90 degree turn in the end.  Weird.

This should hold us over until we’re ready to go in the dining room.  Personally, I love carpentry projects.

How was your weekend?  Planning any projects or did you get any done the last couple days?
